The design and layout of the new school encompassed the core briefing requirements developed at the outset– we created a spacious teaching and learning environment within a constricted and confined urban site.

We designed flexible teaching spaces within a building structure that allows long term adaptability, whilst using the building as a buffer to the noise and disturbance of the urban setting surrounding the school. This gives a peaceful and calm internal environment for teaching and learning that is unexpected within its urban context. Large scale feature windows create picture frame views into the surrounding neighbourhood and alongside the multi-colour clad hall define the building form in its relationship with the adjacent buildings. Other building features ensured optimal functionality including: hall spaces, full cook kitchens, zoned key stage learning zones, centralised halls and ancillary support spaces, enlarged classrooms incorporating flexible break out learning spaces, separate vehicle and pedestrian entrances

Our locally acclaimed scheme, was widely recognised to have surpassed its brief, we created a spacious feeling school on a tight urban sight, and through dialogue with local communities and other LA departments were able to gain exclusive timetabled access to additional external play areas adjacent the school for sole use of the pupils.

Our mission was to create a place of sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of city life to allow teaching and learning to flourish in a secure and comfortable environment. The design of the building creates a protective shield whilst also feeling spacious on this constrained site.
