Summary:

IDP were commissioned to provide architectural design services for the conversion of the existing Grade II listed magistrates’ court and the erection of a new linked building to the rear.

IDP transformed the existing court, which featured 13 apartments across all levels, into an exciting new six storey building with 24 residential apartments and retail at ground level.

Our design was deliberately considerate to allow for high quality, sustainable apartments to be built, whilst protecting the listed nature of the magistrates’ court. The frontage design was a key consideration in order to entice passersby, we created a more active frontage to the buildings surrounding the retail spaces and the town square outside the courts.

The main challenged of this project arrived during the planning stages – and involved extensive consultation meetings with the local authority and public to ensure a gain of support. This, quite rightly included ensuring the scheme remained sensitive to the enhancement of the listed building and town centre.

We were successfully able to retain many of the original features in our design and ensured these remained undamaged during the construction process.
